Old Vienna Cemetery, Town of Vienna, Oneida County, N.Y. situated on the south side of the state road, near the "Long Crossing over the N.Y., O. & W. R. R., midway between North Bay and Jewell (West Vienna) and one of the oldest cemeteries on the then long stretch of wilderness along the north shore of Oneida Lake. At a much later date than that on the oldest stone therein found, there was no settlement between Rome, Oneida County and Constantia, Oswego County; only and occasional settler. The Cemetery is grown up to trees and brush. 1927

	On a bronze tablet set between these stones in this
	Inscription:

	The graves of Captain and adjutant George Marsden,
	personal friend and Staff Officer of General
	George Washington who died Nov. 12, 1817 aged 80 years

	Also his wife Wilmuth Lee of Virginia, Sister of
	Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the Declaration
	of Independence, who died Jany. 13, 1850 aged 93 years

	Capt. Marsden resigned his rank in the British Army
	of Occupation then stationed in Massachusetts, and
	accepted an office in the American Colonial Army
	at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War.

Marsden, He fought at Bunker Hill and in all of the
	battles of Massachusetts and Eastern New York
	His conspicuous military brilliancy won him his
	promotion in 1779 to the office of adjutant on
	General Washington's Staff
	In 1782 Adjutant Marsden married Miss Lee and
	located in Mystic, Mass., remaining there about
	on year, they then moved to the forest wilds of
	Bernhard's Bay and built their permanent home
	bout 6 1/2 miles west of this plot. Their log cabin
	abode was honored in 1783 by a three days visit
	of President Washington while on his tour of
	inspection of the Central New York Fortifications.

	Erected to the memory of her great-grandparents
	in 1921 by Bessie A. Marsden, daughter of the
	late Linus P. Marsden of Bernhard's Bay, N.Y.

	This little fenced in plot is situate on the old Harvey Farm
in the north part of the Town of Vienna. The property is now
(Aug. 1927) owned by Joseph & Pear Cunningham, 717 Lenox Ave.,
Utica, N.Y. It is on the Elpis Road, across from Howd Corner,
in the section called "Oak Openings".
